Arnold Ancestors - Generation 4 - the Garrett family

Grover Cleveland Garrett was born 08 August 1892 in Tennessee, and died 25 July 1968, age 75. He is buried in Pine Grove Cemetery, Floral, Arkansas

Grover Garrett married Cecile Jane Wackerly. She was born 30 August 1894, and died 06 July 1972, age 77. She is buried in Wackerly Cemetery, Independence County, Arkansas.

Children of Grover and Cecile Wackerly Garrett are:

Infant Garrett 1913

James Everett Garrett 1915 (verlie/mildred)

Lue Ella Garrett Nicholson 1918

John Edward Garrett 1920 (verlie)

Vernon O'Dell Garrett 1925 (married violet johnson - sister of elizabeth baker garrett)

Charlie O. Garrett 1927 (elizabeth - her first husband was melvin baker, the son of agnes carter)

William Auther "Ott" Garrett 1932

From FindAGrave memorial:

She married Grover Garrett. He was convicted of killing her father(Clem Wackerly) & sentenced to 5 years in the pen in 1912. They married after his sentence. Grover is buried at Pine Grove Cemetery in Independence County, Arkansas.

Wellsir, I have questions. According to the newspaper article, Cecile was 19 years old. She was born in 1894, so she wouldn't have been 19 until August of 1913. But the murder took place in September of 1912, with the trial some time afterwards.

If Grover was sentenced in 1912 to 5 years in the penitentiary, and they waited until he got out before they got married... Well, their first child was born in December of 1913. ("Infant Garrett" died at birth.) Their second child - James Everett Garrett (husband of Verlie and then Mildred Arnold) - was born in 1915. (While Grover was still in prison?) The third child, Lue Ella, was born in January of 1918, which is cutting it pretty close to the presumed date that Grover would have completed his sentence.

Good old FindAGrave!
This is a photo of the Wackerly family. The man standing on the left side of the picture is Clem Wackerly. The girl on the left is Cecile. Clem's wife, Louisa, is in the center of the picture. (She is the one he said he would kill if Cecile ran off and married Grover Garrett.) The old man standing between Clem and Louisa is Clem's father. The other children are Cecile's siblings, Josephine, William, Thomas, and Trin.

Okay, then. Here are the connections (plural) between the Garrett family and our family:

James Everett Garrett married Verlie Arnold. He had an affair with her sister Mildred, he and Verlie were divorced. Everett married Mildred. Verlie married Everett's younger brother Ed Garrett.

Vernon O'Dell Garrett married Violet Johnson. Violet's sister Elizabeth married Charlie Garrett (Vernon's brother). Elizabeth's first husband was Melvin Baker (son of Verlie and Mildred's cousin Agnes Carter).

(Elizabeth and Melvin are not buried together. They are buried in the same cemetery, but with separate graves.)
Charlie Garrett is buried in Wackerly Cemetery (not too far from Pine Grove). I don't have a picture of his grave.

I'm almost certain there is another connection with Ott Garrett and one of our relatives, but I can't seem to pin it down right now. Anyway, my brain is numb, so this is all for today.
