What I do for fun:

ANNIVERSARY...

Dulcie Mae Jackson married Earl Lavane Nicholson 14 September 1946

I don't have a picture of either of them. Dulcie was the daughter of Etta Lee Arnold and Ben Jackson

Earl Nicholson was the son of Tom and Kizzie Massey Nicholson

According to our family records, 14 September 1946 is the day Dulcie Mae Jackson married Earl Lavane Nicholson. I was able to verify this on the Family Search website.

This is (supposedly) the official Arkansas marriage record. (However, the 'signatures' of Dulcie and Earl are in the same handwriting as whoever wrote the rest of the info on the page.)

According to the Find A Grave website, they were married on 10 November 1943. That date is found on two different memorials for Dulcie -- one of which has her buried in a cemetery in Oregon, and the other has her buried with Earl in Pine Grove cemetery in Arkansas. Those two memorials were put on the website by two different people. Both of them have a photo of her gravestone...

I'm confused....
Dulcie died in Oregon, according to our family records. But was she buried at Pine Grove? Or not?
And did she marry Earl in 1943 (at age 15)? Or 1946 (at age 18)? Their first child was born in 1947, so I'm guessing the September 1946 date is correct.

Earl and Dulcie Mae Nicholson had three children: Carlos, Lynn, and Edith. Carlos died in 2005 in Oregon (according to the Social Security Death Index), Edith died in 2007 in Oregon (I have her obit).

Well, these are the problems that you run into when you start to trace family history. It keeps me busy, and keeps me off the streets, I guess.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO...

Erlene Burford and Arnold Slocum 1941

I only have one picture of the two of them together, in this group photo which also includes Erlene's parents George and Willie Mae Burford, Arnold and Erlene's baby son Larry, Hazel Burford, Raymond and Ruby Burford and their daughter-in-law Mallie.

Raymond, George, and Hazel are siblings -- children of Alexander Oscar Burford. One of their younger brothers, Lester Burford, was my grandfather. Erlene was his first cousin.

I don't have any other pictures of Arnold Slocum, and this is the only other adult picture I have of Erlene.

Arnold and Erlene Slocum had two children: Larry and Linda Sue.
In this photo I believe the boy 2nd from left (front) is Larry Slocum and the girl 2nd from right (front) is Linda Sue Slocum. The man and woman on the left are George and Willie Mae Burford, parents of Erlene Burford Slocum. They would be Larry and Linda Sue's grandparents. This picture was taken in 1956.

The only other photos I have of their family is this one of Linda Sue Slocum's twin babies Caryl and Daryl Carwell, born in 1967.

MEMORIAL TO...

Eulene Estel Carter Daugherty 1919-2005

Eulene was the daughter of John Martin Carter and Amy Tamsett Carter

Here is a group picture of Birdie Arnold, Annie Arnold Hicks, and Amy Tamsett Carter with their children. Eulene is in front, standing to the right of her mother. Her siblings Ned, Vada, Agnes, Ollie, and Elmer, are also in the picture. This photo would have been taken around 1922 or 1923.

Eulene married Ray Isaac Daugherty in 1938

They had two children: Ray Junior Daugherty (Junior was his middle name), and Lowell Glenn Daugherty. I don't have a picture of Lowell, but I do have a picture of Ray Junior, which I was able to obtain just today from the Find A Grave website. As far as I know, Ray Junior is still living. Lowell passed away in 2007.

I have the following information, from Ray Junior, about Ray Isaac Daugherty's funeral:
"Ray died [in Indiana] on February 26, 1965, and was buried on March 4, 1965.  We had two funerals for him. One in Indianapolis where he had owned a garage for many years and had many friends, and then another graveside at Pine Grove [Arkansas] where he was buried. We lived on Wilson Road when he died and the snow was about 4 feet deep. A farm hand that worked for Mr. D. Brown cleared the road with a grader so we could get home from the hospital after he died. He was taken to Batesville, Arkansas, by train and from there he was taken to Pine Grove for burial. It was snowing in Arkansas, also."

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO...

Isadora Matilda Miller Cushman 1881-1909

I don't have a picture of Dora Miller Cushman. I have a picture of the Miller family. Of the four children standing in front, the girl on the left is Dora's daughter Audrey.

I have a picture of Dora Miller Cushman's husband, Andrew John Cushman:

They were married less than four years when Dora died. She died 22 January 1909 from a combination of tuberculosis and typhoid fever. Shortly before her death she gave birth to a premature baby girl who was named Pauline and was buried on the day before Dora died. Dora and Pauline are buried in Lakeview Cemetery in South Haven, Michigan, with numerous other Miller relatives.

These are copies we have of two newspaper articles about Dora Miller Cushman's death in 1909.
Here is the text from the two articles:

MRS. ANDREW CUSHMAN DIED AT 10 A. M. TODAY
Dora Miller Cushman died this morning at 10 o’clock at the home of her mother, Mrs. Alice Miller, corner Indiana Ave. and Superior Street after an illness of about seven months, from serious complication of diseases. During that time she had been a great sufferer, and especially so for the past ten days with only now and then a short respite from pain. She was conscious until the end came and passed away happy in knowing that her suffering was over.
Dora Miller was born in South Haven, Sept. 10, 1881, the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. M. Miller. She attended school until within two years of graduation. Afterwards, for four years she was employed as sales-lady in Noble’s candy store and was a general favorite with everyone who met her either in a business or social way.
In May 1905, Dora was untied in marriage to Mr. Andrew Cushman. with whom soon after, she moved to Berrien Springs where he engaged in the grocery business. A year ago they moved to Kalamazoo, where he entered the employ of the Upjohn Co. This fall Mr. Cushman going on the road as their traveling salesman, Mrs. Cushman came here to live with her mother. Since coming here in October, the tubercular trouble became more pronounced and she has been able to get out but very little. The last time she was down was just before the holidays.
Besides the bereaved husband, there is a little daughter, Audra, two years old last Wednesday who will never remember a mother’s care, devotion, and months of agonized watching over a sick bed; a sister, Mrs. Clifford Girard, who has not yet fully recovered from an attack of typhoid fever; a brother, John C. Miller, who resides at Tacoma, Washington. The sympathy of a host of friends go out to them in the loss of one who was gentle and kind and loving, even when suffering almost beyond physical endurance.
The announcement of the date of the funeral services is pending the answer received from the brother in Tacoma, to whom news of the death was wired before noon. Should he be unable to come, the services will probably take place from the home Sunday.
The infant born to Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Cushman Wednesday night was buried this morning, just a few hours before the death of the mother.

MRS. CUSHMAN BURIED TODAY
Funeral services for Mrs. Dora Miller Cushman were held at the residence of Mrs. Alice Miller on Indiana Avenue this afternoon at 2 o'clock. The number of friends who attended was so large that they filled the rooms to overflowing and spread out upon the veranda and lawn. The room where the casket reposed was literally filled with flowers. The casket was hidden in them while quantities of them were spread on tables and upon the floor. Very few funerals have been the occasion of so lavish a display. Mrs. Cushman was laid away in her wedding dress of white.
Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Carpenter, Mrs. J. L. Avery and Harry Randall sang "Lead Thou Me On" and "Peacefully Sleep." The last piece of music was a phonograph selection which Mrs. Cushman had made special request should be played. It was "Precious Name" beautifully rendered by a male quartet. The association made this selection especially touching. Rev. A. E. Nagler spoke briefly from John 41:1-2, "Ye believe in God, believe also in me. I go to prepare a place for you."
The pall bearers were the uncles of the deceased, Chas. Ford and Geo. Adams of Hartford, Charles Thomas of Bangor and two cousins, Clarence and Roy Thomas also of Bangor, and C. L. Cushman, a brother-in-law of Kalamazoo.
Relatives present from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Adams, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Thomas, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Thomas, Roy Thomas and sister, Miss [Effie] Thomas, John Miller and Homer Miller, all of Bangor, Chas. Ford of Hartford, C. L. Cushman [Andrew's brother] and Mr. and Mrs. Lister [Andrew's sister] of Kalamazoo, and Mr. and Mrs. Cushman, father of the bereaved husband, from Breedsville. Burial occurred in Lake View Cemetery, nearly a dozen carriages following the remains to the grave.

September 09 - Progression of an obsession

Sorry I missed posting yesterday. I got sidetracked while updating the family history roster. There are over 2000 names on it! (I'm SO glad I learned how to use Excel to make spreadsheets!)

larger than 8 x 10 photos (in a 12 x 12" scrapbook)

and two albums full of "Leftovers"

That does not count the albums I already had full of pictures before 2017. Altogether I have 45 photo albums full.

I also have a small photo album full of postcards -- real postcards, sent through the mail, with writing on the back, and stamps - back to when stamps were 1 cent! (I think the oldest postcard I have is one that Ulys sent to Annie before they were married. They were married in 1910.)

I also have a 3 ring binder recipe book filled with hand-written family recipes on large index cards that my mom gave me as a wedding gift in 1977.

I also have 10 decorative boxes (shoebox size) full of pictures, sorted by location. (When I say 'full' I mean standing-on-edge, stacked the entire length of the box. Not all of the boxes are that full, but most of them are.)

I'd like to come up with a clever one-liner to end this post with, but I'm just too tired. :P

MEMORIAL TO...

Amos Doyle Arnold 1912-1919

Amos was the son of George Ned Arnold and Jessie Tamsett Arnold. He was the first child and only boy of their eight children.
Photo: Amos, George and Jessie holding twins Opie and Obie, Wilma, Arbie. (Mildred, Verlie, and Joan had not been born yet.)

Amos died at age 7 of typhoid fever. Nonetheless, we do have several pictures of him:
Photo: Amos Arnold on horse, George Arnold standing.

Photo: Arbie, Wilma, Amos

In the picture below you can barely see Amos. He is on the far left, peeking out from behind a gravestone. The rest of the people in the photo are 'Ma' Arnold, her daughter Annie Arnold Hicks, and Jessie Tamsett Arnold (wife of Annie's brother George), and their children. Ruby, Irene, Cleffie, and Elvin are Annie's children. Amos, Mildred, Verlie, Wilma, and Arbie are Jessie's children.
This picture was taken at Pine Grove Cemetery, where most of our Carter/Arnold folks are buried. The annual Carter/Arnold family reunion was held at Pine Grove Cemetery (between Floral and Banner, Arkansas) until the late 1990s. Since then it has been held at Heber Springs park. As far as I know, the reunion still takes place every year.
