Delena Adaline Arnold was born 20 July 1935 

Delena was the 12th child of George Ned Arnold (brother of my great-grandmother Annie Arnold Hicks)

Elmer Reed was born 20 July 1915

Opie was a daughter of George Ned Arnold and Jessie Tamsett. Elmer's brother, Elvin Reed, married one of Opie's sisters -- Wilma. Late in life, Elmer married my grandmother Cleffie Hicks Burford. Cleffie was a cousin to Opie and Wilma (and all of George Arnold's children).

Jackson Tamsett died 20 July 1925, age 77

Jackson and Sarah were the parents of Jessie Tamsett (George Arnold's first wife). They were also the parents of Amy Tamsett, wife of John Martin Carter (George Arnold's uncle). Sarah Tamsett was the midwife who attended the birth of my grandmother Cleffie Hicks Burford in 1917.

Virginia E Witter was born 20 July 1914

Virginia was the daughter of Julia Gibson and Frank Witter.

Julia was a sister of my great-grandmother Lora Gibson Burford.

Billy Jack Anderson was born 19 July 1936

Bill was the husband of June Barnett.

June is the daughter of Irene Hicks Barnett (sister of my grandmother Cleffie Hicks Burford)

Carl Warren Stickels was born 19 July 1924

Carl was the father of Becky Stickels Burford (wife of Lester Morris Burford, Jr.)

Morris ('Les') was a brother of my mother Wathada Burford Thomas

Iva Jane Gibson Feller died 19 July 1953, age 68

Dorothy Louise Moore Burford was born 18 July 1921

Dorothy was the wife of Bernice Burford (brother of my grandfather Lester Burford)

SPECIAL MENTION 

There is one more Burford relative to whom I want to give special acknowledgement, and that is Dorothy Moore Burford, wife of Bernice Pope Burford. As you may have noticed, she has been an invaluable source of information about the Burford family.  

Wathada’s notes:  

I have decided that Aunt Dorothy can't ever die! She knows everything about the Burford family but doesn't realize it.  When she dies, there won't be anybody else who knows all this stuff.  Jewels of information literally drop out of her mouth and she doesn't even know it...   

Aunt Dorothy cleared that up for me without me even asking about it.  She does that - it just rolls off her tongue...   I wouldn't believe just anybody about that, but my Aunt Dorothy is the one who really told me about that, and I believe every word she says.    

One of the others just sort of hinted at it, but Dorothy tells things plain out and just like they are… Nothing shocks or rattles Dorothy.  She looks life square in the face and just deals with it...

Ned Jonas Carter died 17 July 1900, age 70

Ned and Jane Carter were my great-great-great-grandparents. Their daughter Adaline was the mother of my great-grandmother Annie Arnold Hicks.

Here is the information we have about Ned Jonas Carter in our family history records:

WRITTEN BY ANNIE ARNOLD HICKS --

My Grandmother’s name was Jane Evans before marriage. She married a man by the name of Evans.  They had two children, Elizabeth and Joe.  (Grandma was born about 1846.)  After a few years her first husband died and she soon married a man by the name of Carter and he soon died.  No children were born to them.  Then she married again, a man by the name of Ned Jonas Carter.  This man had three children, Margaret, Mary, and Wesley so that made them five children to start with. [Ned's first wife was Melinda Emiline Clingan. I don't have a picture of her.] Then they had several children.  I will try to call their names.  Sarah, Parlie, Adaline (my mother), John, Beckie, Tilda, George and Ellen...

  

My Grandma lived to be about 50 years old. She died when I was about 3 years old.  I can barely remember when she died in 1896.  She had T.B., but died from taking an overdose of calomel and getting salivated.  You see, when you take calomel and if you eat anything salty or hot coffee soon after taking it, it salivates you.  It makes your mouth real sore and even makes your teeth fall out when it gets real bad, and if you don’t get it stopped it goes to the stomach and eats your stomach up and kills. People used to take calomel for malaria.  We don’t have malaria in the north, but it used to be real bad in the warm climates before the land was cleared up much... 

Grandpa married again after Grandma died but didn’t live with her long.  He left her and came to our house to live when I was about five or six years old.  He died in 1900 with cancer of the stomach at about the age of 60 years or maybe a little older...

Grandpa was of Irish descent. I don’t know Grandma’s descent.  Grandpa was a heavy-set man with large muscles - a very strong man.  He was a blacksmith by trade.  He used to take bitter apple for medicine.  I don’t see any of it now.  It looked just like dried apples in little slices but it is as bitter as it can be.  He gave me a bite of it one time and it tasted so bad I almost never did get the taste out of my mouth and I never did like him very well.  It is possible that he felt so bad that he didn’t want to make friends with us kids.  I remember when he came to our house to live, his stomach was swelled real big, but he was still walking around and I don’t remember how long he lived after he couldn’t be up.  It seems like quite a while, a year maybe.  I remember that he would throw up curded blood, I suppose.  It looked like coffee grounds.  But they had the best doctor that could be had in those days to doctor him, but he would have done as well without a doctor as with one, more than maybe a few shots to kill the pain of cancer in its last stages.  Ma had to bury everything that he passed.  The doctor said just to make sure. We didn’t have toilets then to flush it through.  Neither did we have hospitals then like we have now, so the only thing to do was just keep him at home and do the best we could.  Then we had no undertakers.  The neighbor men made a casket out of lumber and covered it with black cloth, lined inside with white cloth.  And they always had to be buried the next day after death.  He was buried in the old Pine Grove cemetery near Floral, Arkansas...

  I will write a little about Ned J. Carter.  Most of this information given to me by John J. Rhoades and calling Ned Grandpap, as that is what the Rhoades family called him. 

  Grandpap was of average height or a little less.  He was red-headed, left handed and as independent as a hog on ice.  The color of his eyes was probably grey or green.  The family was Scotch, Irish and Pennsylvania Black Dutch.  Most of Grandpap’s descendants are religious people making it seem that he had strong religious beliefs.  He was a republican in politics and a blacksmith by trade, and a good one too.  People would come from far away to have him do their blacksmithing. 

  He seemed to have itchy feet.  He never stayed in one place very long.  He might not move far, but move he would. Grandpap was about as wide as he was tall and in his older age his hair turned white and he also had a white beard.  

  One of the Dunn boys remembered this story about him.  He went to a community party and three boys decided to have some fun at Grandpap’s expense.  After the fun was over, Grandpap’s white hair was red with blood but he was still on his feet.  They had to carry the three boys out.  That just shows they didn’t have much sense.  A smart man doesn’t start a fight with a blacksmith. 

  Another story was that one day a man brought Grandpap some work.  He was one that wanted to tell him how to do it.  Apparently, Grandpap had a short fuse, as you would expect in a red-head, because he got tired of that fella real quick.  Since the guy was telling him where to hit the metal with the hammer, he had him show him just exactly where to hit it next.  The man had to practically put his finger on the metal to show him where to hit it and Grandpap took a swing with his hammer.  He was quick to move his hand and himself and left the work to Grandpap.

I only have the one photograph of Ned Jonas Carter. Fortunately, I do have pictures of most of his offspring.

 Helen Virginia Lockard Burford was born 16 July 1856

Helen Virginia was the first wife of my great-grandfather Alexander Oscar Burford, Jr.

Here is what I know about Helen Virginia Lockard Burford (from various family writings)

Dorothy Moore Burford:

  Helen Virginia Lockard Burford was a weakly person and was not able to take care of her children, so when Lora Gibson was 14 years old, she went to stay with the family and take care of the children and they paid her for doing that job.  She lived with them from then on.     

  Helen Virginia Lockard Burford died of typhoid fever. Her cousin, Asa Gibson had typhoid fever and she brought him to her house so she could take care of him.  Asa recovered, but Helen caught it from him and she did not survive.

Wathada Burford Thomas:

Aunt Dorothy told me that Grandma (Lora Gibson Burford) had gone to stay with Alexander and his first wife when she was 14 years old and lived with them from then on.  I asked her why she had gone to live with them when she was 14, and she said because Helen Virginia (Alexander's first wife) was always sickly and was not able to take care of her children.  Grandma had gone to live with them to take care of the children.  That would have been in 1891 or 1892. Raymond (the oldest) would have been 5 years old then. Most likely it was around the time of the birth of the last child (Hazel) who was born in January 1892.  They paid Grandma for taking care of the children.    

Author’s note: About a year and a half after Helen Virginia died, Alexander married Lora Gibson.

Cleo W. Ford died 16 July 1913, age 18

Cleo Ford died from accidental electrocution.

William John Thomas was born 15 July 1980

Billy is the son of my brother Rick Thomas.

Billy was named after our grandfather Bill Thomas and our brother John Thomas.

Capt. William Treat died 15 July 1917, age 88

To be perfectly honest, I'm not sure how (or if) he is related to our Treat family. Still working on it.

Dalton Dwayne Tucker was born 15 July 1935

Dwayne is the husband of Glynda Carter.

Glynda is the daughter of Ned Jackson Carter, son of John Martin Carter.

John Martin Carter was a brother of my great-great-grandmother Adaline Carter Arnold.

(Glynda has been a prolific source of family history on the Carter branch of the family tree!) 

Delbert Dye was born 15 July 1910

Delbert was the husband of Sylvia Arnold.

Sylvia was a daughter of Marlie Arnold (brother of my great-grandmother Annie Arnold Hicks)

George Morris Hood died  15 July 1960, age 65

George was the husband of Ola Mae Owen.

Ola Mae was the daughter of Paralee Carter (sister of my great-great-grandmother Adaline Carter Arnold)

Samuel Asa Kinney died 15 July 1939, age 32

Samuel was the son of Anna Gertrude Gibson. This is the only picture of him that I have, cropped from a large group photo of the Gibson clan.

Anna Gertrude Gibson was a sister of my great-grandmother Lora Gibson Burford.

Russell Connor Herdman died 14 July 1973, age 68

The photo on the left is from my dad's family history photo collection. The photo on the right is from the FindAGrave memorial for Russell Herdman, and also the memorial for his wife Pearl -- so I'm assuming the woman in the center of the picture is Pearl, with Russell on the left. I don't know who the woman on the right is -- probably the mother of either Russell or Pearl. The Herdman family is related to the Treat family by the marriage of Belle Treat to Ulysses Herdman.

Samantha Renae Anderson married Kevin Reeves 14 July 2001

I don't have a picture of Kevin Reeves. 

Samantha is the granddaughter of June Barnett Anderson.

June's mother, Irene Hicks Barnett, was a sister of my grandmother Cleffie Hicks Burford.

In the photo above, five generations are represented - Irene, June, June's son Randy, Randy's daughter Samantha, and her son Jeffrey. This picture was taken in December 2000.

This picture is Randy and his wife Pauletta with their son Scott and daughter Samantha.

Uriah Baker Thomas died 14 July 1904, age 85

Uriah was a brother of my great-great-grandfather Washington Lafayette Thomas.

Josephus Purtee died 13 July 1940, age 92

One of these twin brothers is Josephus Purtee. They are somehow related to the Herdman family, which is somehow related to the Treat branch of our family tree. (I have just about as many pictures of Herdmans as I have of Treats. Not sure how that happened, because there is only one connection, by marriage, between the two families.)

Marla Lee Hicks was born 13 July 1973.

Marla is the daughter of Clint and Janice Hicks.

Clint is the son of Olan Hicks (brother of my grandmother Cleffie Hicks Burford)

Roy Glen Baker died 13 July 2002, age 62

He was the son of Agnes Carter and Elmer Baker.

Agnes was a daughter of John Martin Carter (brother of my great-great-grandmother Adaline Carter Arnold)

Emma Christine Harting was born 13 July 2005

I'm pretty sure this is a picture of Emma, but I wouldn't guarantee it. I got it from her mother's Facebook page. Her mother is Tammy Jones Harting, daughter of Buck and Judy Jones. Buck is the son of Evalee Hicks Jones (sister of my grandmother Cleffie Hicks Burford.)
