August 19

I don't have any pictures of the few birthday and anniversary people for today, so I'm gonna borrow one from tomorrow.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO...

Irma Oma Dell Barnett Hawley 1928-2010

Oma Dell was my mother's cousin -- the only child of my grandmother's oldest sister Ruby Hicks. Ruby married Arvil 'Jack' Barnett in 1926. (It is said that the reason Oma Dell was an only child was because Jack was unwilling to put Ruby through the ordeal of childbirth again.)

Photo: Arvil Barnett and Ruby Hicks

Ruby was the oldest of the nine children of Ulysses and Annie Hicks. When Oma Dell was born in 1928 some of her aunts and uncles (Bernice and Lowell Hicks) were not even born yet.

Oma Dell married Donald Hawley, and they had four children: Donna Kay, Mike, Danny, and David.

Oma Dell's daughter Donna Kay was a favorite cousin of mine, even though she lived in Missouri and we lived in Michigan. She would come up to visit her grandparents (Jack and Ruby) at least once a year.
Photo: Me and Donna Kay. This would have been Christmas of 1955.
Photo: Donna Kay, Cindy, and me. Cindy is another cousin, the daughter of Bernice Hicks Bridges. This picture was taken at Ulys and Annie's house in Benton Harbor, 1957 or 58.

ANNIVERSARY...

Mildred Jewell Arnold married James Everett Garrett 1939
Photo: Mildred Jewell Arnold. I don't have a picture of James Everett Garrett.

Mildred was a first cousin of my grandmother Cleffie Hicks Burford. She was one of  'Uncle George's girls'
Photo: Uncle George's girls. L to R: Mildred, Arbie, Verlie, Opie, Wilma, Joan, Obie. (This was George's first family with his 1st wife Jessie Tamsett. The oldest child was a boy, Amos, who died of typhoid fever at age 7. George had another son and four more daughters with his second wife, Eula Mae Burnett.)

Mildred and Everett Garrett had six children: Eva Jane, Jimmy Wayne, Betty Ann, Oma Jean, Darlene, and Steven. Darlene died at birth. Steven died the day after his birth. Jimmy Wayne died at age 16 in a car accident. Eva Jane died at age 44 of cancer. As far as I know Betty Ann and Oma Jean are still living.

Mildred and Everett both died in 1966:

 HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO...

Emma Adelia Parker VanMeter

Emma was a first cousin to my great-grandmother Massie Parker Treat (mother of my grandmother Christie Treat Thomas). Emma married John I. VanMeter 12 December 1883, and they had three sons: James Noble, Sanford Stanton, and a third son whose name is not known (his birth was apparently unrecorded). They lived near Waverly, Ohio.

Emma died tragically at age 29.
As the saying goes: "It was in all the papers."

James Noble VanMeter died at age 20 in the Ohio Home for Epilepsy, where he had been a resident for 10 years.

Sanford Stanton VanMeter lived to age 75. He married Edna May Morehead and they had eight children. Stanton died of a massive heart attack just a few months after the death of his wife, for whom he was deeply grieving.

Okay, so... Today I'm just too lazy to do the research to spotlight one person, so I'm gonna list all the people I have pictures of for today.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO...

Kevin Mark Siggins 1973

Photo: Katie and Kevin Siggins
Katie and Kevin are the children of Effie Susanna Ford Siggins. The Ford family is related to the Thomas family -- Nancy Ford married my great-grandfather Charles Thomas. This particular branch of the Ford family -- Otho Simeon Ford and his descendents -- migrated from Hartford, Michigan, to Red Lodge, Montana.

MEMORIALS...

ARBIE DELCIE ARNOLD HAYES died 1999 age 85
Photo: Bill and Arbie Hayes
Arbie was a first cousin of my grandmother Cleffie Burford. Arbie's father, George Arnold, was a brother of my great-grandmother Annie Arnold Hicks. The Arnold branch of the family tree was located mostly in and around Cleburne County, Arkansas.

DALLAS MIFTLIN 'DALE' MILLER died 1903 age 51
The Miller family was related to the Ford and Thomas families. Dale Miller married Alice Ford, sister of my great-grandmother Nancy Ford Thomas. Most of the Millers lived and died around South Haven, Van Buren County, Michigan.

MOSES JOSEPH PARKER died 1889 age 78
Moses Joseph Parker was the great-grandfather of my grandmother Christie Treat Thomas. The Parker branch of the family tree was located in and around Pike County, Ohio.

OTHO SIMEON FORD died 1980 age 73
Otho Simeon Ford was the grandson of Charles Ford (brother of my great-grandmother Nancy Ford Thomas). Otho married Fiina Herranen and they settled in Red Lodge, Montana, where Otho was a county sheriff. Otho and Fiina were the parents of Effie Susanna Ford, and grandparents of Katie and Kevin Siggins (whose birthday is today).

Now we've come full circle!

 HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO...

Gregory Allen Thomas 1952

Remember yesterday? Yesterday was Uncle Bernarde's birthday. Well, today is his middle son Greg's birthday. This is a picture of Aunt Eileen two years ago, on her 90th birthday, with her three sons (L to R): Kim, Mick, and Greg.

Well, that's not really what I intend to post for today. It's also the anniversary the day Michael Herdman married Jemimah Downing (1817). Remember the Herdmans, from the post a couple days ago? I spent a day and a half trying to figure out the relationships of all the Herdmans that I have pictures of. Never did quite get them all figured out. But I think I have some idea who they all are -- except for one 'Mabel' who is still a mystery.

Russell Herdman and Jesse Herdman

Got it? Well, chasing genealogy down a rabbit hole is what I do for fun nowadays. Oh, and as for Michael Herdman and Jemimah Downing... I don't have a picture of them. LOL.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO...

Bernarde William Thomas 1927-1999

Bernarde was my dad's brother. He was seven years older than my dad.
Photo: Bernarde, Richard, Bill and Christie Thomas

Bernarde married Eileen Rice, and they had 3 sons: Mick, Greg, and Kim.

Photo: Richard and Bernarde Thomas

A childhood friend of Bernarde's, Bud Davis, who became a college professor and author, wrote a touching tribute to Bernarde which was published in his weekly newspaper column after Bernarde's death:
I'll post the text below.

Here is a picture taken at Bernarde's 17th birthday party. Bud Davis, as well as some other men mentioned in the article, are in the photograph.

TEXT OF ARTICLE:

So long, old friend

The boom of Bernarde Thomas' big crane jutted against the skyline out in a field west of Keeler. Just the day before when mail lady Tina Mattimore traveled the country roads in that area, she had seen her uncle's big drag line working, turning.
Now when she approaced, the crane was strangely still. And in front of it an ambulance and some men. She stopped and ran over. "What's the matter," she called.
One of the medics said, "What do you want?"
Tina, now thoroughly alarmed, said, "That's my Uncle you have in there!" She could see the wrappers of medical packs on the ground where they had been working.
The EMT softened and said quietly, "Mr. Thomas has apparently had a heart attack and we're on our way to the hospital with him."
So Tina ran back to her car and called Bernarde's wife, Eileen, on her cell phone. But when they got Bernarde into the Emergency Room at Community Hospital, it was too late -- he had departed this life.
The Thomas family and my family had known each other for years. When we were kids they lived at the end of Linden Street past Galbreaths' house. Bernarde was part of our neighborhood bunch of kids. Many games of croquet we played in their front yard. Bernarde's mom, Christie, was a feisty lady. I can remember one day Bill Galbreath teased her until she chased him right out of their yard, brandishing her croquet mallet.
I can also remember the time we ordered fireworks from the Spencer Company in Ohio. Bernarde, Bill, Jim Tollar, Russell Kime and I ordered what goodies we could afford to celebrate July 4th in a loud fashion. Every day we rode our bicycles down to the depot until the package came in by express.
Later we were all back from W.W.II and Bernarde had not been old enough for that fracas. But he did go into the army then. We all went down to the Pere Marquette depot when he left for Basic Training to see him off. And there was a hole in our lives until he got back.
Bernarde had embarked on his career as a truck driver and crane operator with Laverne Rice. Then he bought his own crane and went into business for himself. He also married Eileen Rice and together they built a wonderful life and a new home in Shady Acres Subdivision on Lake of the Woods outside of Decatur. In fact, he was instrumental in developing that whole area.
The rest of his life he spent working with his crane, named "Betsy." And he was proud of his accomplishments. Whenever he traveled through Southwestern Michigan, he could say, "I dug that hole... I worked there... or I dredged that ditch." He even put in three irrigation ponds for Marion's dad, Louis Kling. Someone once said that he made this part of the state one of the "holiest" places in the country.
Bernarde and Eileen reared three sons: Michael, Gregory, and Kim. They are all married and have produced eight grand-children and five great-grandchildren. The boys went into business with their dad and have all been successful. We have met them and believe they all turned out so well because Bernarde and Eileen "raised them by hand."
All those years Bernarde and Eileen lived in their home on Lake of the Woods. It is a beautiful spot and Bernarde loved the wildlife and nature that surrounds them. He also was an avid bowler all of his adult life, with a respectable average. And he played golf every week. Early morning games were the best, and he loved to get his boys out there. He said after they had been out late, they were easier to beat.
This past spring, their kids surprised them with a cruise for their 50th wedding anniversary. Bernarde and Eileen went on the trip with some of their friends; and during that time Bernarde achieved what is every golfer's dream -- a hole in one! At the Plantation Golf Course in Venice, FL, they were playing with friends Gordy and Opal. They were on the par three 124 yard 15th hole. It is an island hole surrounded by water.
Using a six iron, Bernarde teed up, set his feet, and swung. The ball landed a few feet from the hole, kept on rolling, and right in the cup! And "Salty," as he was nicknamed by Gordy, proved that he could still swing a club.
Bernarde departed this life just as he wished -- digging a huge hole with his crane "Betsy." That day they tried to revive him, but he had gone into the Shadowed Part of The Great Circle of Life.
At his funeral services we listened to the comforting words of Rev. Brian Hall and a beautiful eulogy delivered by James Abshagen -- to whom I am indebted for some of my information.
Afterwards we met for a delicious luncheon prepared by the ladies of the VFW Celery City Post No. 6248, Decatur. There we visited with Eileen, the family, and friends. Bernarde's brother, Richard, told me more neat family stories. He lives in Watervliet with his wife Wathada, who is a former student of mine.
There is no denying a huge empty spot in our lives with the loss of Bernarde. He lived his life well, devoting much of it to his wife and family. The rest he spent making our part of the state a better, more productive place. He was always a good citizen of his community, and a good friend. What better recommendation could anyone have at the close of a life.

MEMORIAL...

Albert V. Herdman 1841-1855

I don't have a picture of Albert V. Herdman, and I don't know why he died at age 13. But I have a bunch of pictures of Herdmans, and, frankly, I'm not sure how they are all related to our family. The only thing I know for sure is that my grandmother's aunt, Belle Treat, married Ulysses Grant Herdman.

Photo: Ulysses and Belle

They had 3 children, the youngest of which was my 'Aunt' Faun. I used to go with my grandparents to Ohio every summer to visit Grandma's relatives, and we usually stayed with Faun and Bob (McDonald) at their house outside of London, Ohio. Faun was Grandma's first cousin. She and Bob had no children. Bob was a prison guard, and a soft-spoken gentle giant of a man -- I could hardly imagine him being a guard in a prison. Aunt Faun was tiny and energetic. She and I had the same birthday -- November 10 -- and I received a birthday card from her every year of my life until she died. Aunt Faun was very special to me.

Photo: Bob and Faun McDonald, Bill and Christie Thomas. (I'm the one who took the picture.)

The other Herdmans I have pictures of are related to Ulysses Herman in one way or another.
Photo: John Downing Herdman 1837-1916.
John Downing Herdman is the third generation of Herdmans in our records. The earliest Herdman we have was Henry Herdman I, born in Germany in 1759.  Henry's son John D. Herdman married Anna Susanna Downing, and they were the parents of John Downing Herdman. John Downing Herdman married Margaret Johnson, and they were the parents of Alvero Milton Herdman.
Photo: Alvero Milton Herdman
Alvero Milton Herdman married Anna Maria Burns, and they were the parents of Hazel Opal Herdman. Hazel Opal Herdman married Elbert Lyman Grooms.

That's all the pictures I have from that particular lineage. I still have a bunch more Herdman photos, but I haven't quite yet figured out how they're all related. So I think I'll go work on that for a while...
