On This Day in Family History - April 20

 April 20, 1966 was a very bad day for Uncle George Arnold's family. (Fortunately for Uncle George, he didn't live to see it, having died in 1939.)

George Ned Arnold was the brother of my great-grandmother Annie Arnold Hicks.

George married Jessie Tamsett and they had 8 children - a boy and 7 girls.

The oldest child, Amos, died of typhoid fever at age 7. 

After Aunt Jessie died, George married Eula Mae Burnett and they had 5 children - a boy and 4 girls.

On 20 April 1966 three people in the family died.

Bud's son Buddy Lynn Arnold, age 6, was hit by a car while waiting for the school bus. (I don't have a picture of him.)

On the same day, Mildred Arnold Garrett was shot and killed by her husband, Everett Garrett. Everett then shot and killed himself.

In preparing this post, I ran across another interesting tidbit of information about the Garrett family. Everett Garrett was first married to Mildred's sister Verlie. Then Mildred and Everett had an affair, and Everett and Verlie divorced. Verlie then married Everett's brother Ed Garrett. Ed and Everett had another brother, William Garrett, who married Elizabeth Baker. Elizabeth Baker was a the daughter of John Martin Carter - an uncle of George Ned Arnold. (The Arnold and Carter families are so intwined that it's not easy to separate them. George Ned Arnold's mother was a Carter, and his father was an Arnold. So both of those branches of the family are "ours".) 

Well, that's all a matter of record. The new fun fact that I discovered today is this -- 

The parents of those Garrett boys were Grover Cleveland Garrett and Cecile Wackerly Garrett. According to the FindAGrave memorial for Cecile Garrett:

 "She married Grover Garrett. He was convicted of killing her father [Clem Wackerly] & sentenced to 5 years in the pen in 1912. They married after his sentence."

Another Mystery Solved

 Remember this picture?

Someone wrote on the back of this picture "Bett and Sarah, sisters of Adaline Carter Arnold"

This has been a mystery because although Adaline had sisters named Elizabeth and Sarah, the women in this picture couldn't possibly be them. (I think I posted this picture on Facebook one time and had quite a discussion with some of my folks about whether or not they could be who they are supposed to be.) 

Well, I'm just now getting around to looking through 3 big boxes of source materials my parents used when they were researching their family histories. And today I ran across a little note that said "Bett & Sarah -- (Bett Anderson). Is it really Bett?"

Wait, what? Anderson? I know who that is!! The wife of our Civil War soldier, John Anderson!

And, oh yeah, I only recently found his WIFE. And guess what her name was...

Elizabeth Evans Anderson.

When I found her on FindAGrave, I also found pictures of her.

The picture on the left is Elizabeth with her daughter Rosetta. 

Question -- Was Elizabeth Evans Anderson a sister of Adaline Carter Arnold? No. But she WAS a sister of Adaline's MOTHER, Jane Evans Carter. Here's a composite showing Elizabeth Evans Anderson side by side with "Bett and Sarah"...What do you think? 

And then I went to my Carter family history/genealogy records, and you'll never guess what I found there...

Elizabeth Evans Anderson and her half-sister Jane Evans Carter had the same mother. And guess what their mother's name was...

SARAH !!!

Okay, now look at the picture again

These are not Adaline's sisters. The woman on the left (Bett) is Adaline's MOTHER's sister. And the woman on the right is HER mother -- Sarah Bishop Evans.

So...

Sarah is my great-great-great-great-grandmother.

Top row - my mother Wathada, her mother Cleffie, her mother Annie

Bottom row - Annie's mother Adaline, her mother Jane, and her mother Sarah.

P.S. The little girl in the picture could be Bett's daughter Rosetta.

On This Day in Family History - April 19

 William Charles Thomas married Christie Beatrice Treat 19 April 1924

Bill and Christie were my grandparents.

They had two children - Bernarde and Richard (my dad).

Of their 6 grandchildren, I was the only girl.

Christie Thomas died 11 November 1978, age 74.

Bill Thomas died 18 April 1980, age 80.

They are buried in Arlington Hill Cemetery, Bangor, Michigan

On This Day in Family History - April 18

 Juliet Lough Rice was born 18 April 1822, in Braxton, West Virginia

Juliet was the daughter of Prudence Gibson and Peter Lough.

Prudence Gibson was the daughter of Nicholas Gibson -- one of our better-known relatives. He was the son of John Gibson, who was the 2nd governor of the Indiana Territory, and Ann Shikellamy, the daughter of Chief Shikellamy of the Oneida tribe. Nicholas was born in 1765 and was captured by Indians at the Yellow Creek Massacre in 1774. Nicholas' mother and at least one sibling were killed in that attack. Nicholas lived with the Indians for five years. It is said that he was sold back to some white settlers for a barrel of whiskey. He served as a Private in the Virginia militia. Nicholas Gibson died in 1858 at the home of Peter Lough and Prudence Gibson Lough (his daughter). 

Juliet Lough married Oliver Shurtleff Rice

Oliver married Juliet Lough in neighboring Richland Co, IL on January 23rd, 1840. They lived in Clay, then Richland County, Illinois and were the parents of nine children:

Martin Luther Rice b. 31 Jul 1853 d. 20 Sep 1855

Lavernia Rice b. 24 Jul 1855 d. 12 Feb 1929

Oliver Lincoln Rice b. 16 Feb 1860 d. 22 Jun 1935

Sometime between 1870 and 1875, Oliver and Juliet moved out west setting in Rubens, Jewell Co, KS.

Juliet died December 20th, 1892 at the age of 70 and Oliver died February 20th, 1899 age 81.

They are buried in  Webber Cemetery Webber, Jewell County, Kansas

On This Day in Family History - April 17

Abner Samuel Rhoades married Julia Anna Leu 17 April 1910

Abner was a son of Margaret Carter Rhoades

(Margaret was a half-sister of my great-great-grandmother Adaline Carter Arnold.)

Abner married Julia Anna Leu and they had seven children - Noah, Silas, Naaman, Paul, Hosea, Julia Leu, and John David

 

I don't have a picture of Julia Rhoades, and I don't have any specific pictures of their children, although I have a picture of "Abner Rhoades' boys"

I also have a picture of "Aunt Margaret Rhoades and some of hers"

I don't know if these are Abner's sons or not, but she looks too old for them to be her own sons, so they are probably grandsons. They could be sons of Abner or sons of some of Margaret's other children (she had at least 10 other grandsons, besides Abner's sons).

Note: the boy on the right in the photo above looks an awful lot like one of Margaret's grandsons whose FindAGrave memorial features his mugshot...

This is Hardy Echels Ford - son of Margret Rhoades' daughter Rosa.

On This Day in Family History - April 16

 Charles (Chuck) Hicks was born 16 April 1949

Chuck Hicks is the son of Olan and Barbara Hicks. (Olan was a brother of my grandmother Cleffie Hicks Burford.)

Nancy's sister, Alice, married Dale Miller, which made the connection between the Miller and Thomas families. Alice's grandson, Allan Miller, was raised by Nancy's daughter Effie Thomas Wieland, when his mother died shortly after his birth.

Aunt Kate and Uncle George didn't have any children. They lived with Aunt Effie and Uncle Harry Wieland for a while. (Effie and Harry also had no children of their own.)
