June 19

Maud Cartee Hall died 19 June 1919, age 20 (cause of death, tuberculosis)

Maud was the daughter of Nancy Ellen Carter and Will Cartee

PHOTO: Maud Cartee with Arthur Ramsey. As far as I know, Arthur is not related to our family. Maud married Sam Hall.
In this photo Sam Hall is in the back row far left (wearing a white hat). Maud is standing next to him. To the right of Maud is her father Will Cartee, and next to him is Ellen Carter Cartee, Maud's mother.

From Annie Arnold Hicks:

Ellen married Will Cartee the first time, and raised four children.  One of them was married when Will took up with a woman and left Aunt Ellen and of course, he soon wanted to come back but she wouldn’t have him back.  And she struggled and worked and raised her three children (one of her children had died), and did a fine job of it.  They are all married now and have nice families.  And she married a man that treats her right.  His name is Charlie Haigwood.  Her oldest girl died at about 25 years with T.B., I believe.  Her name was Maud.  Maud was married before her parents separated.  She had two sisters and one brother - Lillie, Ralph and Dorothy.

From Glynda Carter Tucker:

The last child of Ned and Jane was Nancy Ellen.  She was also born in Oregon County, Missouri.  She was born the 25th of March, 1884.  She married William Cartee in 1898.  William was a brother to Thomas that married Isabell Matilda Carter.  William and Thomas had a sister that was married to James Wesley Carter’s son, George.  Her name was Rebecca. Ellen and Will had five children.  I was told that William and Ellen were divorced shortly after the last child was born, sometime after 1919.  She raised the three younger children alone.  The oldest girl, Maude died not long after she married in 1919 and the second child, a boy, Mirl, died at age two. Ellen married Charley Haigwood in 1934.  They lived around Thayer, Missouri. They had a cafe at one time at Alton, Missouri, I believe.  Ellen died 11 April 1972. She is buried at Alton.  She is the only one of Grandpap Ned’s children that I remember. Ellen’s three youngest children are still living.  Lillie lives in Oregon state and is in very bad health.  Dorthy lives in Springfield, Missouri, and Ralph lives in Alton, Missouri.

June 18

Emily Jane Stanley was born 18 June 1838.

Emily was the 2nd wife of Smith B. D. Gibson

PHOTO: Front - Smith and Emily Gibson. Back - Asa and Adaline Lucretia Gard Gibson.

Smith Gibson's first wife was Rebecca Ocheltree. I don't have a picture of her.

Smith and Rebecca Gibson had three children - Asa, James Albert, and George. George died in 1855 at age 2. Rebecca also died in 1855. I don't know their cause of death.

Emily and Smith Gibson had a daughter, Mary. She was born in 1862. Mary appears in the 1870 census, age 8. She does not appear in any other census records. It was written in some old Gibson history that Smith Gibson had a daughter who died very young. Most likely this was Mary. There are no other children listed in census records for Smith and Emily Gibson.

Asa Gibson married Adeline Lucretia Gard. They were the parents of my great-grandmother Lora Gibson Burford.

PHOTO: Lora Gibson Burford, Alexander Oscar Burford, Jr. (my great-grandparents)

Lora and Alexander were the parents of my grandfather Lester Burford.
He married Cleffie Lorene Hicks, and their first child was my mother -- Wathada.

Burton David Arnold was born 17 June 1918

Burton was the son of John and Gracie Arnold.
John was a brother of my great-grandmother Annie Arnold Hicks.
Burton died at age 1 (from one of the diseases that were common back then, I don't know which one). This is probably the only extant photo of him.
The girl holding Burton in the photo is Irene Hicks, daughter of Annie Arnold Hicks.

Clarence John Johnson was born 17 June 1903

Clarence was related to the Herdman family. The Herdman family is related to the Treat branch of our family tree by the marriage of Belle Treat to Ulysses Herdman. I'm not sure why I ended up with so many pictures and so much information about all the Herdman ancestry, since there was no other connection. I think my dad knew some of the Herdmans, but I'm not really sure about that. Anyway, he ended up with a lot of pictures of them when he was researching the family history.

Judy Lee Mock Jones was born 17 June 1942
Judy is the wife of Charles F. "Buck" Jones III.
Buck's mother, Evalee Hicks Jones, was a sister of my grandmother Cleffie Hicks Burford.

Riley Michael Griffin was born 17 June 2001
Riley is the son of Mike and Karen Burford Griffin.
Karen is the daughter of Lester Morris Burford, Jr.
Morris was the son of my grandparents Lester and Cleffie Hicks Burford.

Wesley Cethus Purtee died 17 June 1911, age 62.

They were related to the Herdman family (see remarks above)
Their mother was Susannah Herdman

William I Cartee was born 15 June 1876

This is the only picture I have of Will Cartee.
He was the husband of Ellen Carter (standing in front of him, bending over slightly)
Here is another picture of Ellen

Here is what I know about Will Cartee, from the memoirs of my great-grandmother Annie Arnold Hicks. (She is on the far left in the group picture.)

Ellen Carter was the youngest sister of my great-grandmother Adaline Carter Arnold (Annie's mother).

Here is a description of the Carter family, with pictures that I have of the people mentioned.
PHOTO: Ned Jonas Carter and Jane Evans Carter.

Here is what Annie wrote about them:
My Grandmother’s name was Jane Evans before marriage. She married a man by the name of Evans.  They had two children, Elizabeth and Joe...  After a few years her first husband died and she soon married a man by the name of Carter and he soon died.  No children were born to them.  Then she married again, a man by the name of Ned Jonas Carter.  This man had three children, Margaret, Mary, and Wesley so that made them five children to start with.  Then they had several children.  I will try to call their names.  Sarah, Parlie, Adaline (my mother), John, Beckie, Tilda, George and Ellen.

PHOTOS: Elizabeth Evans, Joe Evans (children of Jane Evans and her first husband)

PHOTOS: Margaret and Mary Carter
I don't have a picture of Wesley Carter.
(Wes and Mary Carter married siblings Rebecca and Luke Dunn)

PHOTOS: Sarah and John Carter

PHOTO: sisters Adaline, Ellen, and Paralee ("Parlie") Carter

PHOTO: Tilda Carter with her husband Tom Cartee
(Tilda and Ellen married brothers Tom and Will Cartee.)

PHOTO: George Carter

I don't have a picture of Beckie Carter. She died at age 25 from tuberculosis. She married John Lingo. I don't have a picture of him, either.

Here is a picture of my great-grandmother Annie Arnold Hicks, from whom these family history excerpts were taken.
