On This Day in Family History - February 2

 Odell Avanell Bertha Bernice Hicks was born 02 February 1929

Well, according to family lore, that was supposed to be her full name. Officially, it's Bertha Bernice. In real life she was called Bernice.

Bernice was the 8th living child born to my great-grandparents Ulysses and Annie Hicks. (Their first baby was stillborn.)

On Ulys' right knee is his granddaughter Oma Dell. On his left knee is Bernice.

 

Bernice married Jay Bridges and they had two children, Shelby and Cindy. I don't remember Jay. They were divorced. My childhood memories of Bernice are from the years when she and Cindy were living in a tiny apartment in the upstairs part of Ulys & Annie's house in Benton Harbor, Michigan.

Bernice died in 2016 at age 87.
