June 19

 MEMORIAL

Maude Cartee Hall died on 19 June 1919, age 20. Cause of death: tuberculosis.

I'm a little confused about this girl because I have a picture of her with Arthur Ramsey, but she married Sam Hall. I have at least one more photo of Arthur Ramsey among the family pictures, but I can't find any evidence that he was ever actually related to us.

Adaline Carter Arnold is my great-great-grandmother, the mother of Annie Arnold Hicks. Adaline had a sister named Nancy Ellen (called Ellen) who married Will Cartee. Their first child was a daughter, Maude. She married Sam Hall. Maude died of tuberculosis at age 20, a few years after her marriage.

So... let's see.... Maude Cartee was a first cousin to my great-grandmother Annie. (Maude's mother and Annie's mother were sisters.)

Here is some information written by family members about Ellen and Maude:
From Glynda Carter (a cousin) --
"The last child of Ned and Jane was Nancy Ellen. She was also born in Oregon
County, Missouri. She was born the 25th of March, 1884. She married William Cartee in 1898. William was a brother to Thomas that married Isabell Matilda Carter. William and Thomas had a sister that was married to James Wesley Carter’s son, George. Her name was Rebecca.
Ellen and Will had five children. I was told that William and Ellen were divorced shortly after the last child was born, sometime after 1919. She raised the three younger children alone. The oldest girl, Maude died not long after she married in 1919 and the second child, a boy, Mirl, died at age two.
Ellen married Charley Haigwood in 1934. They lived around Thayer, Missouri. They had a cafe at one time at Alton, Missouri, I believe."

From Annie Arnold Hicks --
"Ellen married Will Cartee the first time, and raised four children. One of them was married when Will took up with a woman and left Aunt Ellen and of course, he soon wanted to come back but she wouldn’t have him back. And she struggled and worked and raised her three children (one of her children had died), and did a fine job of it. They are all married now and have nice families. And she married a man that treats her right. His name is Charlie Haigwood. Her oldest girl died at about 25 years with T.B., I believe. Her name was Maud. Maud was married before her parents separated. She had two sisters and one brother - Lillie, Ralph and Dorothy."

Group photo with Sam Hall and Maude Cartee Hall circled in red, Will Cartee in orange, Ellen Carter Cartee in yellow, Adaline Carter Arnold in blue. Annie Arnold Hicks is on the far left, standing next to my great-grandfather Ulysses Hicks. The baby on his lap is Irene, and the child standing next to him is Ruby. This picture would have been taken about 1916.
